Yeah, about that hindsight thing.
Everyone’s a genius and a prophet when it comes to looking backwards.
Just ask anyone: Israel’s idea of cutting off aid to pressure Hamas into a deal was never going to work. Clearly. And the proof: it didn’t.
Just one problem. Throw away the crystal ball, and it could have.
Humanitarian aid has been Hamas’s lifeline since 10/7. When the smuggling routes of their UN benefactors were cut off and they had to rely on internal revenue creation, they were in real trouble. Not the forte of a governing body whose only industry is terror.
Since the Hamas massacre and atrocities of October 7th, 2023, Israel has facilitated 2,000,000 tons of aid to the Gaza Strip. Feel free to do the math because it is relatively simple. There happen to be 2,000,000 people in Gaza and if that equation stumps you, you may want to stop reading here.
As it turns out, free humanitarian aid to help the citizens of Gaza is of no use to its own government so instead, the fine friendly folks at Hamas hijacked up to 90% of the aid, stockpiled it, and sold it at exhorbitant rates back to its own people. The proceeds cycled back into the terror coffers, keeping Hamas fat, safe, and paid while the Human Shield Nation suffered above.
And the world cried out!
Of course it cried out!
How dare Israel not feed its enemy in time of war! How dare Israel stop funding the terrorist machine that exists solely to destroy them!
And, as international pressure is wont to do, Israel was forced to feed the enemy once again. And the hostages didn’t come home.
Did the tactic work? No.
But it was a calculated risk and war is chaotic.
For all the people who just knew it would never work, they would have said the same thing had the beeper operation or Iran attack failed. In each of those, there were decades of planning and innumerable moving parts, any of which could have glitched and ended in catastrophic failure. Screaming success was far from a foregone conclusion.
Yet it was the conclusion.
And now, as Israel threatens a full takeover of Gaza, the debate rages on whether it is a good idea or bad. But I can say one thing for sure. When its all over, everyone will nod their heads and say “I told you so.”
